I saw it on the way home tonight. It's the 5th of December and I finally saw it for the first time this year. I'm sure it won't be the last time I see it because it's every where this time of year. Christians have been saying it for years - it's a part of the season. Here it is "Jesus is the reason for the season." We especially have heard it the last few years with the emphasis on how everyone must say "Merry Christmas", as if saying "Happy Holidays" is somehow equivalent to denying Christ (but I digress). My real problem with this slogan is it's not a completely true to say that "Jesus is the reason for the season." It makes a nice bumper sticker and looks great on a road sign but it's not all together true. Yes we celebrate God sending His son into the world on this holiday. But what was the reason for Jesus coming? It wasn't because God's son needed a birthday celebration. With regard to the reason that God sent His son, on this we are crystal clear - "For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) It turns out that we are the reason for the season. We are the reason God sent His Son into the world. Christmas is the time when we remind ourselves and everyone around us that Christ came for us. That's the reason we celebrate this time of year. So beloved of God, have a Happy Holiday as we share the great love given to us.

Happy Holidays Ed.
Happy Holidays. Wish i could spend them at ccc.
Amen! That saying has always bugged me. Last I checked the reason for the season was for stores to make money. I much prefer the idea taht WE are the reason. God is truly awsome!
I think we should conspire to make Kelley the reason for the season.
It is funny that you mention John 3:16. By the way this is really not about Christmas at all. Whenever my mind starts to wonder and I feel myself having caddy thought or stupid worries, I try to quote scripture in my head. All I know is John 3:16. Great verse, but not for everything. Yesterday, I learned John 3:17, "Jesus came to save the world, not to condemn it." Much more appropriate in this day and age as a Christian I think during the holidays and year round!
I agree Julie.
