Changed your mind

We often say "I changed my mind" about things.  Recently I was having a conversation with a friend.  This friend and I are very alike in most ways.  But there is a major fundamental, at our core difference - Jesus.  If you didn't know I'm a pro-Jesus guy.  My friend is pro-Jesus as well but not pro-Jesus, son of God, savior of the world.  As we are talking we got into a very interesting conversation and then my friend said, "So when we was the last time you changed your mind on something that really mattered to you.?  Not like what you like to drink or what side of the bed you sleep on. But something that is at your core."  That one took me a few minutes to answer.  In fact I had to say those words that my pride hates to say, "Uhh, I don't really have an answer for that."

Now I did eventually come up with an answer.  But the question made me start thinking - how often do adults really openly question what they believe and "change their mind" about something.  So I'm asking you to comment here.  What is the last thing that really matters to you that you changed your mind about?   How hard was it to do that?

This is one of your best posts ever, but yet hasn't been commented on (until now). I think it is very rare for a person to change their mind about a core belief. Yet, we spend so much time arguing, teaching, and discussing, hoping to get others to change or believe the way we do.

I consider myself someone who is very open to learning. But I can tell you that I have not changed my mind on any core issue since I developed my main beliefs in high school.

All of the major topics - politics, abortion, religion, the death penalty - come to mind - I have not changed my position on any of them.

Yes, I have changed how I react and discuss. But my core has not changed.

Many people will say "but if it happened to you or a loved one you would feel differently." I have had my share of "tragedies" and my beliefs did not change.

Maybe I am more "educated" than others or have a stronger "faith." I don't consider myself all that brilliant of a person, but I did learn about various sides of many issues when I "decided" which side I was on.

Anyhow, brilliant post Ed. Extremely thought provoking. All one can do is educate and then it's up to that person to make the decision.
