A church leaves the Ghetto

Okay here is a story I've been following and I'm wondering what you guys think. It's a news story about a church in Virginia. You'll have to click the link to see it. Please leave comments to let me know your reaction.

Wow! I want that kind of courage. I'll admit, I wasn't completely sure about the post cards. Not the pictures so much, but the wording. But I totally get it now. I'm soooo geeked about Chapter Two!

Awesome. Let's do it!

I'm not sure why they have to do "church" there. When Jesus hung out with tax collectors and sinners, he just loved them by being himself and sharing truth with them. More power to this group if they're reaching people, but I don't think they need to set up a service to do that. Why not just go to bars (or coffee houses, or anywhere else people gather) and share ourselves with people there? We don't need a preacher or special music to do this. Friendship evangelism is powerful!

You are exactaly right - THE MOST effective way to reach people is friend to friend. Vince and the guys at Forefront are doing the church in the bar because it sort of fell into their lap. They were looking for a place to start a church on the other side of thier town (like we are doing) they asked the bar about meeting there on Sunday and the bar said "No." Because it's one of their bigger days. But they offered them Tuesday. When Vince went back to his team and told them they could only have Tuesday the team loved it. They said none of their friends would ever come on Sunday because they party on Saturday night and are hung over. BUT they thought they would be sober on Tuesday night because they all have to work on Wednesday morning. That's why they started a service on Tuesday night in a bar. It put them in another location AND they thought their friends would come. So at it heart it was friendship evengelism.
