Thoughts on a Sunday Night

  • Attendance was down today. I forget how many people go out of town when there is a school holiday. It always surprises me. But what a great service for those that were there.
  • Very cool baptisms today at 2nd and 3rd service. I loved both of them for different reasons. One of them is a guy I've come to know on our tech team, way to go Tom! The baptism at 3rd service was performed by a guy who I remember coming to the church several years ago and accepting Christ. Now He is the one baptizing someone else, way to go John!
  • Jason Collins is a preaching stud! I think that's okay for me to say. Loved the way he talked about society training adults for divorce. That's a phrase and concept I won't soon forget. I think he is right on.
  • We are just two weeks from the start of CHAPTER 2. This is one of the most critical times in our church's history. Please make plans to - PRAY, GET INVOLVED in the next five week campaign, GIVE what God tells you to give. We have a big job in front of us and it will cost us ($6 million) - please be ready.
  • Falcons threw that game away today. When you get 5 turnovers you should win!
  • Just left the church building and the Student Ministry has an all night event happening (no school tomorrow). Every time I see our Student Ministry team I'm thankful for what they do. I have three boys whose lives have been shaped and changed by these great volunteers.
  • This week I'm going to blog about a question that I could not believe three of you wanted me to answer.
  • I am still sometimes surprised how strong the pull of the Christian Ghetto is and how shocking grace is when you are deep in the ghetto. "Would you send out a card that said criminals are welcome at Community Christian?" YES I WOULD!! Great idea. It doesn't mean I'm supporting them being criminals or will help them in crime. It just means we really believe in Grace.
  • That's all for tonight. I'll write again tomorrow. Until then don't go out without a buddy. It's dangerous out there so stick together.

Ed, I have a question. In this series we are talking about temptation and the two voices in our minds. One from God and the other from the other guy.
We don't really talk about the other guy too much at CCC at least not for the 2-3 years we've been going. My question is at what point does personal responsibility end and Satan's influence begin? I don't mean to be demonstrative but I feel that its a bit of a cop-out to blame too much on Satan. I definitely believe there is a bad and evil influence in the world I just wonder how much should be ascribed to "his work".

This is a very painful and tough series to listen to but very well done. Jason's message was awesome yesterday.

I saw an article online about churches using a violent videogame
to attract young people to church.

Whats your take on this? Would CCC do something like this? Maybe a different game?

This is a great question. I believe the Bible teaches that Satan can't make anyone do anything. He can't create, he can only influence us with what is already in us. In James 1:14 the writer says when we are tempted it's by "our own evil desires." But with that said the Bible is also clear that Satan is at work in this world and has a definite plan to destroy what God is trying to do. He can't make us do it. So when it happens it is our responsibility but just as God calls us to good Satan is using everything he can to call us to evil. I agree with you that any time an individual claims blames something they did on Satan it's a cop out. But to not be aware that He is at work and trying to influence us to turn toward ourselves and away from God is just stupidity.

With regard to the article metioned above the video game that they mention is Halo. You asked would CCC do that - we already have! Our Student Ministry has had Halo tournaments as a part of their Super Bowl outreach for the last few years.
