There was a period of my life where I wasn’t sure that I wanted to be a dad. But now that I’ve been one for 21 years it is one of the greatest privileges in my life. I have three great young men, John, Nathan and Benjamin who all call me Dad and I love it. I could not be prouder of them. They are all very different, all amazingly talented, they all love God and are very committed to doing what they can, to see that everyone else comes to know Him.
Every Father’s day I am reminded that while I love being their dad I haven’t always done a great job of being their dad. I had way higher aspirations when they were born for how I would do this job. But I often was too preoccupied with me to get it done. But every Father’s day is a good time for me to choose again to do what is necessary to be the man I know God is calling me to be. It also gives me the chance to become the kind of friend to these three young men that I want to be.
So dads, while you are being honored today, why don’t you also take a moment and recommit to become the man you know you God deigned you to be. Lean into your heavenly Father, do what He is calling you to do and He will provide the strength you need.
